Diabetic Eyecare

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes affects the small blood vessels at the back of the eye. All people with diabetes are at risk of getting diabetic retinopathy, whether their diabetes is controlled by diet, tablets or insulin. The condition is detected by screening appointments, when the optometrist examines the back of the eyes to look at the retina. Newbold Opticians provides diabetic screening services for the NHS.

This includes:

  • Diabetic retinopathy screening
  • Slit lamp diabetic retinopathy screening
  • Ophthalmic Photographic Diabetic Review (OPDR)

Patients with diabetes should receive a letter indicating that they are due to visit their optometrist for screening. The type of screening required will be detailed on the letter.
